Conserving Water

Conserving water takes all of us graphic

Santa Cruz County received near-record amounts of rainfall during the 2016-2017 season but that came after five years of drought. Although reservoirs may now be filled, critical groundwater basins will take years to recharge. Periodic drought is a matter of fact for Santa Cruz and California.

During the drought, particularly in 2014 through 2016, mandatory water rationing was in effect in the city of Santa Cruz and on campus. The entire campus community responded, cutting water use by nearly 30 percent.

While the immediate water shortage has abated for now and mandatory rationing has ended we must continue to conserve this precious natural resource.
