Length of Term

Two‑year term, beginning July 1, 2012

UC Santa Cruz alumni have the rare opportunity to help shape the future of the University of California by becoming a voting member of the UC Board of Regents.

The position is especially influential now given the fiscal crises facing the state and the University of California.

Job Description

Title: AAUC Officer/Alumni Regent/Regent-Designate

The four AAUC officers are the president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. Officers serve for two consecutive years; the first year as AAUC Treasurer or Secretary, the second year as President or Vice President. Service on the Board of the Regents is tied to this two‑year term: the AAUC Treasurer and Secretary serve as Regents‑designates (without voting rights), and the AAUC President and Vice President serve as full‑voting Regents.

The primary role of the AAUC Officers is to serve on the Board of Regents as alumni representatives, representing all UC alumni. The officers also serve as liaisons between the AAUC member organizations and the Board of Regents. Additionally, the officers provide programming leadership to the AAUC.

General Responsibilities:

  • Provide Regents meetings briefings at the quarterly AAUC meetings.
  • Promote awareness of alumni concerns among the Board of Regents.
  • Promote awareness of systemwide issues and concerns among AAUC member organizations by meeting with campus alumni association boards.
  • Write articles for alumni publications and the AAUC web site.
  • Represent the AAUC at Regents' functions, such as annual Regents' dinner to honor alumni leadership, and all official AAUC functions.
  • Serve on special universitywide committees, Regents' task forces, or on standing committees of the Regents.
  • As a member of the executive committee, assume leadership role in assisting staff to implement existing AAUC programs, developing agenda items for AAUC meetings and developing new systemwide alumni initiatives.
  • Play a key role in the annual UC Day event in Sacramento and assist in developing strategies for the recruitment and involvement of alumni advocates.

Time Commitment:

  • Four quarterly AAUC meetings and dinners (4-5 hours each)
  • Participate in weekly AAUC officers' conference calls (30 minutes each)
  • Attend 6 Regents meetings (2 days each)
  • Meet with campus alumni boards (approximately 1 day per visit; 3 or 4 occasions annually)
  • Attend UC Day events in Sacramento—2 days
  • Attend the annual dinner at Blake House in Kensington—one-half day
  • Attend meetings/events at the request of the Regents as needed—varies
  • Attend at least one all-UC Alumni event each year—1-2 days
