Announcements
Tuesday,
5/8/01: The Independent
System Operator,
which regulates power distribution in the state, has issued a Stage Two alert for
California today (Tuesday, May 8). There is a possibility that a Stage Three alert
will be issued this afternoon and rolling blackouts will resume. Rolling blackouts
affected portions of the state yesterday. PG&E has indicated that blackouts,
if they occur today, will begin with customers in Block 14. If necessary, Blocks
1 and 2 will follow. If UCSC, most of which is in Block 4, is subject to a blackout
today or at some time in the future, the campus will remain open during the outage.
Should an outage occur, staff should check with their supervisors if they have questions
about their work environment or assignment. In addition, faculty and students should
plan to attend classes and maintain office hours. Faculty would decide whether to
reschedule or cancel a class depending on the needs of the course and the conditions
in the classroom. The Independent System Operator is urging conservation throughout
the power crisis.
