Tandy Beal's “Mixed Nutz! The Nutcracker ReMixed” opens Nov. 20 at Theater Arts Mainstage

Dancers, circus artists, gymnasts, and vocalists representing a world of cultures—including Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese, Basque, Brazilian, African-American, Japanese (and even someone from Maine!)—will converge on campus beginning November 20 for Mixed Nutz! The Nutcracker ReMixed."

Presented by Tandy Beal & Company and the UCSC Theater Arts Department, this holiday show for the whole family will run for three weekends through December 6 at UCSC’s Mainstage Theater.

Mixed Nutz!—directed and choreographed by California’s circus and dance maestra, Tandy Beal—is a fun-filled, contemporary performance, loosely based on the treasured holiday favorite. The show is a two-hour festival of the arts for everyone who loves music, imagination, and extraordinary physical feats.

Mixed Nutz! features original songs, seasonal favorites, and a re-scoring of Tchaikovsky’s well-loved music—all wrapped up in Beal’s multi-colored vision of circus and dance, and tied with a ribbon of zaniness.

Over 30 dancers and circus artists will perform while Tchaikovsky’s music is sung by the Bay Area’s multi-talented a cappella vocal group, SoVoSó (“Soul…Voice…Song”) featuring Lori Rivera.

Mixed Nutz! includes world-class performing artists such as Chinese foot-balancer/acrobat Wang Hong; Bay Area aerial ring artist Sylphie Currin; rhythmic gymnast Saki; young hoop divers from San Francisco Youth Circus; and the extraordinary jugglers Rock Lerum, Iman Lizarazu, and Tim Furst (Flying Karamazov Brothers).

Rounding out the cast are Mexican folklorico dancers from Watsonville’s Corazon en Flor and UCSC’s Los Mejicas, plus hip-hoppers, ballroom dancers, local gymnasts, and theater arts students.

The Theater Arts Department has been bringing professional artists to UCSC to present a Thanksgiving-season holiday show for more than a decade. This marks the 12th year the department has partnered with a professional company to bring a holiday theater extravaganza to the community.

Tickets are available online at santacruztickets.com, at the UCSC Ticket Office, and at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.
