May 31, 2009 UCSC in the NewsResearch on algal toxins in coastal waters led by ocean scientist Raphael Kudela was featured on KTVU TV news and KGO Radio and in the San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times, and Santa Cruz Sentinel. In a story that focused on links between the use of illegal drugs in the United States and the growth of drug cartels in Mexico, the Associated Press quoted sociologist Craig Reinarman, who said, "There's no escaping the fact that we have the highest drug rates in the world." The story, which was widely distributed, appeared on dailypress.com. The Santa Cruz Sentinel covered the campus's first-ever student-led Memorial Day dinner in coverage that also noted a $100,000 grant the campus recently received to bolster programs for military veterans. The San Francisco Chronicle quoted economist Rob Fairlie in a story about people who become self-employed because they can't find salaried jobs, what Fairlie calls "necessity entrepreneurs." Fairlie was also featured in coverage by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution of entrepreneurial activity in the Atlanta area. The San Francisco Chronicle ran a profile on American studies alumnus Jesse Thorn, host of the popular public radio show The Sound of Young America, who first broadcast his arts and comedy show on the campus radio station. The San Jose Mercury News lauded theater arts professor Danny Scheie for his role as the title character in the new comedy, You Nero, at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. The Center for Agroecology's Grow a Farmer fundraising campaign received some nice media coverage that included stories on KQED's Bay Area Bites blog, the Honest Meat blog, Growing Edge magazine, Santa Cruz Good Times, Of the Soil blog, Mother Nature Network, and BusinessWeek's web site, which picked up the Santa Cruz Sentinel article. Associate professor of art Lewis Watts was quoted in a Santa Cruz Weekly story about the annual Irwin Scholarship exhibit, featuring work by promising art students at Sesnon Gallery who have been awarded scholarships from the Art Department. The Santa Cruz Sentinel published an article about the 30th anniversary of the Life Lab Science Program, which is based on the UCSC Farm. Metro Santa Cruz profiled psychology undergraduate Christine Le, who won a local pub's recent songwriter's showcase. Professor emeritus of environmental studies Michael Soulé was featured in an announcement on the Live-PR web site about a new book.
