Poet David Swanger will read from his new award-winning book of poetry on Wednesday, September 19, at Cava Wine Bar in Capitola.

Swanger, professor emeritus of education and creative writing at UC Santa Cruz, is the author of numerous books, including four other book-length collections of poetry. His latest book, Wayne's College of Beauty, received the 2006 John Ciardi Prize for Poetry. Poems in the book address four themes: fathers and mothers/husbands and wives; water/war; known/unknown; and departure/arrival.

Swanger will read selected poems and discuss "Ways Into Poetry" as part of the monthly "Pizza and Prose" series for local writers and artists. Organized by UCSC alumna Lori Kearney, the series is sponsored by the local chapter of the National Writers Union and the Central Coast Writers branch of the California Writers Club. Pizza & Prose takes place the third Wednesday of each month at Cava Wine Bar, 115 San Jose Avenue. The event begins at 6:30 p.m., and Swanger's reading will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call (831) 476-2282.

"Pizza and Prose is an opportunity for writers and artists to meet and network," said Kearney. "Each month, we invite a guest speaker to talk about their latest work. Everyone is welcome to attend--professionals, amateurs, and anyone interested in a fun and intellectually stimulating evening."

A popular teacher and widely acclaimed author, Swanger has received the Foley Award from America magazine, an NEA fellowship in poetry, and a fellowship from the California Arts Council.
