If you’re looking to grow your own “apple a day,” plan to attend a free workshop on apple growing and variety choices offered by fruit tree expert Orin Martin. The workshop, followed by an apple tasting, will take place at the Alan Chadwick Garden at UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, September 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“The workshop will cover the basic ‘almanac’ of year-round apple tree care and review a ‘greatest hits’ list of apple varieties that do well on the Central Coast,” says Martin, who has managed the Alan Chadwick Garden at UC Santa Cruz for 30 years.

Martin will offer growing tips, review what’s ripe this time of the year, and field questions from participants. “We’ll focus on the varieties that are proven performers under Monterey Bay regional growing conditions,” says Martin.

The talk will be followed by a tasting of apples grown at the Chadwick Garden, where more than 150 apple varieties thrive in an organic setting.

The main entrance to the Alan Chadwick Garden is located on McLaughlin Drive across from Stevenson College, where free parking will be available. No pre-registration is necessary to attend the workshop.

For more information or questions about access, call (831) 459-3240, e-mail jonitann@ucsc.edu, or see http://casfs.ucsc.edu. The workshop is cosponsored by the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems and the Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden.
