Free poetry reading and music at Alan Chadwick Garden June 9
Enjoy poetry and music in the historic Alan Chadwick Garden on Saturday, June 9, from noon until 2 p.m.
A bevy of accomplished poets will read their work at "A Garden of Poetry and Music," with guitar music by Eric Jarmie. The event is free and open to the public, and is part of a yearlong series of events celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Student Garden Project, now the Chadwick Garden, at UCSC in 1967. The poets and musician at this year's event are as follows:
- Patrice Vecchione -- An accomplished poetry teacher, author, and editor, Vecchione has taught poetry to children and adults in the Santa Cruz area for more than 25 years through her "Heart of the Word" program. Her poems have appeared in such magazines and anthologies as Quarry West, Puerto Del Sol, Women of the 14th Moon, and Lovers. Her latest book is Writing and the Spiritual Life: Finding Your Voice by Looking Within, and she has edited a number of anthologies, most recently Revenge and Forgiveness.
- Barbara Bloom -- Bloom has a bachelor's degree from UCSC and a master's degree from San Francisco State University. She has taught composition and creative writing at Cabrillo College for more than 20 years. Her first book-length collection of poems, On the Water Meridian, was published in May by Hummingbird Press.
- Rosie King -- King taught literature and poetry at UCSC while writing a dissertation on the poetry of H.D. on her way to a doctorate. Her first book, Sweetwater, Saltwater: Poems by Rosie King, was published by Hummingbird Press this year. Says reviewer Robert Stroud, "There is . . . a lyric freshness to her work, poems that shine like river stones, polished by long immersion in the waters of the spirit. What a blessing to have this new book, these gracious poems." King's poem "Old South School" was recently featured on Garrison Keillor's National Public Radio show The Writer's Almanac.
- Stephen Meadows -- Author of The Wildest Place: A Collection of Poetry, Meadows was a longtime resident of Santa Cruz and has a bachelor's degree in creative writing from UCSC. His poems have recently been featured in "Sing Me Your Story, Dance Me Home," an exhibition of California Native visual artists and poets, and in the collection The Dirt is Red Here: Art and Poetry from Native California, published by Heyday Books. He now lives in the Sierra foothills, where he teaches and writes.
- Uriel Crum -- A freestyle poet and landscape architect, Crum is a new voice at the "Garden of Poetry and Music" event.
- Eric Jarmie -- This Santa Cruz guitarist has studied extensively in Spain; he specializes in flamenco and other classical Spanish styles. He has a bachelor's degree in music from UCSC.
The main entrance to the Alan Chadwick Garden is located on McLaughlin Drive across from Stevenson College, where free parking will be available.
