Job fair helps students consider graduate school

In this tight job market, many students are exploring the option of going to graduate school earlier than they might have otherwise. Talking directly with school representatives is an important step in that exploration process, says Barbara Silverthorne, acting director of UCSC's Career Center.

Today, the center sponsored its annual Graduate and Professional School Information Fair. The fair, attended by nearly 400 UCSC undergraduates, featured 72 schools, two testing services, and one military recruiter.

The visiting recruiters represented schools from as far away as overseas and covered studies as diverse as law, medicine, social work, engineering, and design.

The 371 students who participated represented a 20 percent increase over last year's fair.

"We are pleased to have a variety of professional schools visiting the campus today, providing our students with an important opportunity to explore graduate-school options," Silverthorne said. "It was a very productive event."
