UC Santa Cruz offers resources to students displaced by off-campus fire

UC Santa Cruz officials are encouraging students displaced by a fire in an off-campus co-op on Sunday to use university resources to secure replacement housing. In addition, they are putting the word out to displaced students to attend a meeting that will take place Tuesday (February 4).

An estimated 30 UCSC students were living in the Cesar Chavez House co-op, located at 316 Main Street in the Beach Hill area of the city of Santa Cruz, at the time of the fire. The co-op is not affiliated with UCSC; it is part of a national network of co-ops affiliated with the North American Students of Cooperation (NASCO). The fire broke out and was contained by firefighters on Sunday night (February 2). Damage estimates were unavailable.

UCSC officials, meanwhile, were encouraging displaced students this morning to contact campus staff for assistance in securing replacement housing. The following resources are available to displaced students:

For University Housing
Students are advised to contact either the Campus Housing Office or their residential college. There are housing spaces available on campus and at the UCSC Inn, staff report.

UCSC officials were also putting the word out to displaced students to attend a meeting on Tuesday, February 4, at 11 a.m. in the Community Room at the Santa Cruz Police Department at 155 Center Street. Student organizers from Chavez House and representatives from NASCO and UCSC will be present.
