Rep. Sam Farr and representatives from the Peace Corps will present a reception and film about the life of Peace Corps founder Sargent Shriver from 5:30-8 p.m., April 13, in the Alumni Room at the University Center on campus. UC Santa Cruz was recently honored for producing 52 Peace Corps volunteers last year, second among all medium-sized colleges and universities in the nation. In fact, UCSC produced more volunteers than many of the largest schools in the country. In a letter to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Farr, a former Peace Corps volunteer himself, wrote, "I'd like to add my congratulations to the school and its students for recognizing just how important service is." The Peace Corps has sent invitations to the event to 500 returned Peace Corps volunteers, family members of Peace Corps volunteers, those who have expressed an interest in joining the Peace Corps, and others. During the event, the Peace Corps will give UCSC Chancellor George Blumenthal an award for the campus’s outstanding contributions to the Peace Corps. It is vital "that the United States send our best and brightest overseas, not only to help others but also as a way to develop our own young people," wrote Farr. "Peace Corps volunteers are some of the best ambassadors we have, and it's a program that needs to grow." The Peace Corps is preparing celebrations for its 50th anniversary in 2011. In all, 665 UC Santa Cruz alumni have served in the Peace Corps. More than 195,000 Americans have served in 139 countries.
