Re: Campus provost provides budget update

As I've shared in previous messages, UC faces substantial mid-year budget cuts, and the likelihood of further cuts next fiscal year.

It is frustrating for all of us to await these cuts without knowing how deep they will be or how individual campus programs and operations, and the dedicated individuals who support them, will be affected.

While waiting for the Legislature and Governor to act, we must continue to plan. I want you to know how that planning is proceeding.

Last week, I wrote to each principal officer asking that they propose scenarios for absorbing a 10 percent budget reduction in their area. I invite you to review the letter conveying that request and the context in which it was made.

I want to note, particularly, that this request in no way implies that we are imposing a flat, across-the-board reduction to all campus operating units.

As my letter notes, this is simply a step in understanding how potential cuts on our academic, research, and service enterprises will impact our campus.

As this planning process evolves, I'll continue to keep you informed.
