Re: Appointment of Women's Center director

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Roberta Valdez as Women's Center Director, effective August 1, 2000!

Roberta has many years experience working with women's issues, including founding mother of a woman's non-profit organization, Rural Women's Resources, in Mendocino County. She comes to UCSC having served as Program Administrator with the Mendocino County Office of Education for 6 years, implementing various educational programs. Prior to her employment with Mendocino County, she served 2 years as Assistant Learning Center Coordinator with Mendocino College.

Roberta's work experience includes educational program development within school districts in Connecticut, New Mexico and northern California. Presently, she directs two regional grants at the Mendocino County Office of Education: an after school program staff development technical assistance program and a networking-coordination for Healthy Start projects, and a federal DOE Even Start Family Literacy Program.

Roberta is a 5th generation Californian and grew up in Sacramento, California. She attended American River College, Sacramento State and San Jose State College in the late 60's and early 1970's. As a graduate student, she has done anthropological fieldwork in Mexico, attended Highlands University in New Mexico and finally Sacramento State University.

Roberta enjoys bridging people with resources and community development work. Much of her work in the non-profit sector has involved building volunteer programs in communities with a broad spectrum of youth, adults and community-service required people referred by the courts in lieu of jail or fines.

Roberta is very excited about moving to Santa Cruz and assuming the position at the Women's Center - working with center staff, students, university personnel and the greater community.

Please welcome Roberta as the newest member to the Student Affairs Division and of the campus!
