Re: Memorial for Peter Rushton
The campus community is invited to attend a memorial service to honor UCSC lecturer
Peter Rushton and celebrate his life. The service will be held on Friday, June 9,
from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Cowell College Provost House.
A respected teacher of Chinese language and literature, Peter was a nationally known
scholar who published an important study of Chinese literature of the Ming Dynasty
in his book, The Jin Ping Mei (1994, Mellen University Press), and was working on
a second book when he succumbed to cancer on April 24th after a very brief illness.
He had just reached his 50th birthday. Peter is survived by his wife, Jacqueline
Ku, who also teaches Chinese at UCSC. (A complete obituary can be seen at http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/messages/99-00/rushton.05-02.htm.)
The service is being planned by Peter's colleagues, Miriam Ellis and David Orlando.
Anyone who would like to have the opportunity to share thoughts or remembrances of
Peter at the memorial is asked to contact either Ellis (ext. 9-4170; elisan@cats)
or Orlando (x-92570; dorlando@cats) as soon as possible.
A scholarship fund has been established in Peter's name and contributions may be
made out to the UC Santa Cruz Foundation, marked "Peter H. Rushton Memorial
Fund," and sent to the Carriage House.
