Re: Staff picnic
Dear Colleagues:
Over the last several days, some employees have indicated their intention to boycott
the Staff Picnic scheduled for this Friday, Oct. 22. This is sad news for me. I always
look forward to this annual event, because it is an opportunity to speak informally
with many individuals that I otherwise don't often see. We all work hard at our jobs,
and it seems that an occasional pleasant interlude contributes to a favorable working
environment. I'm sorry that not everyone will choose to attend, but I look forward
to visiting with those who are available.
Apparently, some staff interpret the offer to share lunch and time together as a
substitute for salary considerations. Let me clarify: there is no such connection.
Although I hope for--and I anticipate--successful completion of the collective bargaining
processes, collective bargaining and the development of other compensation programs
at the University of California are centralized through the Office of the President,
and they occur within parameters defined by law and within resources allocated by
the California Legislature and the Office of the President.
With that in mind, I invite all staff to inform themselves, in order to correct misunderstandings
and misinformation. Details are posted on the Web about UC collective bargaining
status with affected unions, the Regents policy on chancellors' salaries, the methods
used to develop staff salary scales, and other related topics. (Go
to Staff Human Resources Announcements.) Please read this information, and, if
you don't have ready access to the Web, please contact the Public Affairs Office
or the Staff Human Resources Office for a printed copy of the material.
Again, I appreciate the hard work and dedication of all staff. I look forward to
sharing some informal time together this Friday.
Cordially,
M.R.C. Greenwood
Chancellor
