Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Convocation

Campus Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that the campus's 16th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Convocation will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2000, at 7 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. Our keynote speaker will be Susan L. Taylor, editor-in-chief of Essence magazine. The convocation is free of charge and open to the public. No tickets will be required. A reception sponsored by the African/Black Student Alliance will immediately follow the convocation.

Susan L. Taylor has been editor-in-chief of Essence magazine since 1981 and senior vice president of Essence Communications, Inc. since 1993. She has guided Essence through a period of phenomenal growth, making it the largest
and most highly regarded magazine for black women in the world with a monthly readership of more than eight million people. A graduate of Fordham University and a current graduate student at Union Theological Seminary, Ms. Taylor is the recipient of numerous awards and citations as well as honorary doctorate degrees from Lincoln University and Spelman College.Through her popular monthly column, "In the Spirit," and her numerous public appearances, she has become an example and inspiration to the African American communities she promotes. She is the author of two best selling books, "Lessons in Living", and "In the Spirit," a collections of her monthly columns. A tireless advocate of black entrepreneurship and an avid supporter of community-based organizations, she is personally committed to helping disadvantaged women and young people realize their strengths and take charge of their lives.

This annual convocation celebrates the life and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by presenting speakers to discuss current civil rights issues of freedom, justice, and opportunity. The convocation also seeks to build partnerships and develop dialogue within the campus community, and with the local communities served by the university. The convocation is traditionally held in the week following Dr. King's birthday, but due to scheduling problems, we have had to delay this year's event until February. We hope you will join us on February 8 for a very thoughtful and inspirational presentation by Ms. Taylor.

Sincerely,

Trink Praxel
Convenor, Convocation Planning Committee
