Re: Martin Luther King, Jr. convocation

In January of each year, the UCSC campus hosts an important annual convocation honoring the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The convocation celebrates the life and dream of the late civil rights leader by reaffirming the human ideals of freedom, justice and opportunity. Each year, the event is coordinated by a committee of students, staff, and faculty who come together to plan and develop all major aspects of the event, including keynote speaker selection, convocation program, ancillary activities, and access/ticketing issues. Administrative and logistical support is provided by the University Events Office.

This convocation is a very important opportunity to raise awareness of civil rights issues, develop dialogue, and build partnerships both within the campus community and with our local area communities. Previous Convocations have featured Michael Eric Dyson, Myrlie Evers-Williams, Cornel West, bell hooks, Shirley Chisolm, Martin Luther King, III, and other distinguished speakers. The Convocation's success depends on the active participation of students, staff and faculty who have particular interests in or concerns about current civil rights issues. We are now forming the organizing committee for this year's Convocation and invite you to join us in creating this event.

Meetings will be held about every two weeks from the end of October until the event in mid-January. If you would like to join the organizing committee or would like additional information, please contact me via email (trink@cats.ucsc.edu) or phone (x9-2941). We need to start meeting in October so that we will have sufficient time to select the convocation speaker by the middle of November!

The Martin Luther King, Jr Convocation has the potential to contribute significantly to our on-going conversation about current civil rights issues, but its success is dependent upon an active and representative committee. Your insight, participation and dedication will have a lasting impact on our campus and in our communities. I encourage you to join us and to pass along this invitation to others whom you feel may be interested.

Thank you!
