Re: UCSC supports First Night Santa Cruz

Campus Colleagues:

This New Year's Eve, for the third consecutive year, UC Santa Cruz is proud to support First Night Santa Cruz as its Volunteer Sponsor. First Night is one of Santa Cruz County's most popular local events, drawing more than 30,000 people downtown on December 31 with performances and arts activities for children, teens, and adults. First Night is a safe, exciting, and meaningful way to welcome in the New Year--and the new millennium --with your family and friends.

The staff, faculty and students of UC Santa Cruz have a long history of giving back to their community by contributing their time and resources to a variety of important causes and organizations. This is one reason that being the Volunteer Sponsor for First Night Santa Cruz has seemed an appropriate and representative role for UC Santa Cruz to play. In addition, I urge you to consider being a volunteer for First Night on December 31. You will underscore UCSC's valuable contributions to our community--and you will help to make this celebration of the new millennium a memorable one for the Santa Cruz area.

By way of further background, First Night is created and produced completely by local community volunteers. Over 100 people work throughout the year to recruit and select the participating artists, to raise the necessary sponsorships, to plan the myriad logistical details, to promote the event, to plan the procession, and to market the First Night admission buttons. On the one day of the celebration, more than 600 volunteers are needed to staff some 30 performance and visual arts sites, to set-up and strike outdoor stages and signage, to act as roaming "hosts," and to manage the procession. It is only through the work of those who are willing to contribute their own personal time that this grand community tradition continues from year to year.

All First Night volunteers who work three hours or more will receive a free First Night button with a flashing light. The first 20 UC Santa Cruz staff, faculty and students who volunteer for First Night as a result of this letter will receive an additional free First Night button! Call the First Night office at 425-7277 for further information and mention this letter for your additional free button. And I hope to see you there!
