Administrative MessageSeptember 8, 2006 To: Staff and Faculty From: Ginny Steel, University Librarian Re: Library replacement costs increaseI am writing to alert you that the lost book replacement fees for McHenry and the Science & Engineering Libraries are going to increase on October 1. The campus Miscellaneous Fees Committee has endorsed this increase in the fees charged to borrowers who do not return library materials. The new fees are the first increase since March 2000, and they reflect the rapidly rising cost of books in today's market. Any item billed for replacement on or after October 1, 2006, is subject to the new pricing rules. The charges for replacing books will be as follows, effective 10/1/06: * Books with N, Q, R, and T call numbers: minimum $100.00 up to the actual replacement cost The charges for replacing periodicals will remain the same: * Unbound periodicals: $70.00 I urge you to do your best to avoid these charges. The library serves as a wonderful communal resource if we all work together to make it so. One tip for avoiding overdue and replacement charges is to check your library account online frequently and use the online book renewal function (http://cruzcat.ucsc.edu). You can also renew books over the phone by calling McHenry or Science & Engineering (459-2756 at McHenry Library and 459-5300 at the Science & Engineering Library), or you can come in to either library. We regret having to raise the replacement fees, but this is necessary because the cost of replacing lost items has increased so much since 2000. If you have any questions or comments about this, please contact Catherine Soehner, Interim Head of Access Services at soehner@ucsc.edu or via phone at 459-2554. Thank you.
