Re: Possible Metro bus system strike

Workers with two Santa Cruz Metro bus system unions -- United Transportation Union (UTU) Local 23, representing bus drivers, and SEIU Local 415, representing support staff -- may announce any day now that they are planning to strike. Announcement of the exact strike date will be made with as little as an eight-hour notice to the public.

UC Santa Cruz employees who regularly ride Metro buses to and from campus should plan now for alternative transportation so that they are able to get to work if a strike occurs. As a courtesy, supervisors who are aware of transit-dependent staff are encouraged to ensure that this notice of the impending Metro strike reaches those employees so that advance preparation for alternative transportation can be made.

UCSC employees who are in need of ride assistance, and those who can provide rides, can prepare by registering at no charge with Commute Solutions, the local rideshare agency. By logging on to http://www.CommuteSolutions.org and entering your trip origin, destination, and commute times, commuters can find carpool, UCSC vanpool, or bike partners using the free online ride-matching service. Home addresses are confidential and only your phone number is made available for contact. Personalized Ride-match services are also available by calling the Commute Solutions staff, (831) 429-POOL, during normal business hours.

In the event of a Metro strike, UCSC's Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS) campus system will operate extra buses on campus to assist with transporting bus riders around campus. To accommodate extra vehicles needing space to park on campus, TAPS will provide overflow parking if necessary.

Updated information on the status of a strike, as well as revised campus transit schedules and parking information, will be available on the TAPS web site at http://www2.ucsc.edu/taps -- phone inquiries about TAPS services can be made at (831) 459-2190.
