From: Interim Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Kliger

Re: Appointment of Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies and Vice Provost for Silicon Valley Initiatives

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointments of Professor Lisa Sloan as Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies and the appointment of Professor Carl Walsh as Vice Provost for Silicon Valley Initiatives.

The appointment of Professor Sloan recognizes the need for a full-time administrator to oversee graduate education. Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies Sloan reports directly to the Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor and is responsible for graduate and postdoctoral education on the Santa Cruz campus. She will provide campus leadership as well as academic, administrative, and strategic direction to the Graduate Division. Professor Sloan came to UCSC in 1992 as a research scientist with the Institute of Marine Sciences; in 1994, she joined the Department of Earth Sciences. She has served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies since 2004 and is quite familiar with the challenges and operations of the Graduate Division.

Professor Carl Walsh has been appointed to the position of Vice Provost for Silicon Valley Initiatives with responsibility for academic programs based in Silicon Valley, the NASA Ames University Affiliated Research Center (UARC), and the Bio-Info-Nano Research and Development Institute (BIN RDI). Professor Walsh is with the Economics Department and has served as Faculty Assistant to the Chancellor for the past year with responsibilities for Silicon Valley initiatives.

I am grateful to Vice Chancellor Robert Miller for his efforts in the last year in taking on Graduate Studies after the retirement of Professor Frank Talamantes, and for his work in securing the UARC and leading it through the beginning stages of development. Vice Chancellor Miller will continue as Vice Chancellor for Research this year and has informed me that he intends to return to the faculty in September 2006. I will be beginning a search in the fall to find his replacement.

Join me in congratulating Lisa Sloan and Carl Walsh on their new assignments and in expressing our gratitude to Bob Miller for the tremendous progress he has helped UCSC make.
