Re: Death of Staff Member

It is with sadness that I write to inform you of the death this past Sunday of Virginia Gail Fierro, a UCSC staff member. Virginia, who was also a student on campus in the 1970s, passed away at her Santa Cruz home after a lengthy illness. She was 53.

Virginia earned an M.A. in sociology at UCSC in 1979 and had started work toward a Ph.D. Her tenure as a staff member on campus began in 1997, when she was hired as assistant to the director of the Bay Tree Bookstore. In 2002, she took the same position for the UC College Prep Initiative, administered by Student Affairs. Virginia was also active in the campus's Second Harvest Food Drive.

A memorial service for Virginia is planned for Wednesday, December 21, at 10:30 a.m. in the Santa Cruz Room at the Coast Santa Cruz Hotel (Dream Inn).

Please join me in expressing condolences to Virgina's husband; their three children; other family members, including her sister, Bertha, who works in the Registrar's Office; and to her many colleagues and friends, on and off campus.

Family members and friends are establishing a fund to benefit Virginia's children. For more information, call ext. 9-4544 at the Bay Tree Bookstore.
