Re: Campus Diversity Climate Study

I would like to announce some exciting upcoming events that will directly follow the inaugural symposium week and will continue our theme of Achieving Excellence Through Diversity.

The Committee on Affirmative Action and Diversity has undertaken a comprehensive study of campus climate and practices to be completed in winter 2006. We would like to encourage your participation in two crucial aspects of the study.

First, in the month of November, there will be a series of campus forums designed to engage all members of the campus community in a dialogue about current campus life. Each of these forums is open to every member of the campus and will provide a rare opportunity to review campus data and to discuss how this information compares with your own views of the support for and culture of diversity. Supervisors are encouraged to provide release time for participation in the forums based on operational needs.

A second aspect of the study will be the issuing of a survey questionnaire, which will be distributed to each member of the campus community by electronic mail and regular mail at the start of the winter quarter.

Each of us is a critical part of the diversity fabric of the campus. I strongly encourage you to attend one of these forums, to publicize this work to your friends and colleagues, and to complete the survey questionnaire so that we can hear and record your concerns, ideas, and assessments. Please watch for the Academic Senate announcement and consult the campus calendar for details of these important events.

I look forward to seeing you at the symposium and other events for Celebration 2005 this week (http://celebration2005.ucsc.edu) and working with you to continue creating an inclusive environment in which we can all excel.
