Re: Death of a UCSC student

It is with much sadness that I write to inform you that we've received news that one of our students, Sarah Guerrero, died this past Saturday of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Sarah, 20, was a junior majoring in Latin American and Latino Studies. She was affiliated with Oakes College.

Sarah was an impressive young woman, having received a scholarship this year from the Northern California Chicana/Latina Foundation. She was very active with the campus's MEChA council and was helping organize the upcoming conference, Practical Activism, cosponsored by Oakes and Colleges Nine and Ten.

She was also very active in the campus's high school outreach programs, helping bring students of color to UCSC.

A student employee on campus, Sarah was in her second year working as a teaching assistant at the Granary Child Development Center.

Funeral services for Sarah will take place on Thursday, October 20, at 11 a.m. in Saint John's Cathedral, 2814 Mariposa Street, in her hometown of Fresno.

An on-campus memorial is also being planned by Oakes College and will take place in the near future. For more information about the campus memorial, please contact Susan Welte, college administrative officer of Oakes, at 459-2418.

Please join me in expressing our very deepest sympathy to Sarah's family and to her many friends.
