Re: Appointment of Acting Dean for Division of the Arts

I am happy to announce that Professor Leta Miller has agreed to serve as Acting Dean of the Division of the Arts from January 1, 2006, through June 30, 2006, while Dean Edward Houghton is on sabbatical leave. Dean Houghton will resume his duties as Dean on July 1, 2006.

The Chancellor and I are very pleased that Professor Miller is available to take on this important role. Professor Miller has been a member of our faculty since 1978, and she has served in a number of key positions within her department and division, including serving as Department Chair for three years, from 1992 to 1995, and again in 2004-05. She also has provided significant Senate service, including membership on the Committee on Teaching, the Committee on Privilege and Tenure, the Committee on Research, and the Committee on Academic Personnel, which she chaired for two years. In addition to her campus service, she is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Musicological Society and the Society for American Music, for which she has served in a number of leadership positions. Professor Miller's recent research deals with 20th-century American music; she has authored books and articles on Lou Harrison, John Cage, Henry Cowell, Charles Ives, and others.

UC Santa Cruz is fortunate that someone of Professor Miller's experience and expertise is available to accept this important role, and I thank her for her commitment.

Please join me in welcoming Leta Miller to this position.
