Administrative Message

September 26, 2005

To: Campus Community

From: Chancellor Denice D. Denton

Re: Chancellor's campus message: administrative appointments

Dear UC Santa Cruz Colleagues:

It is with genuine pleasure and appreciation that I announce the following appointments to key campus administrative positions. More details, including highlights of the appointees' academic backgrounds and past achievements, is listed at the end of this message.

David S. Kliger, Professor of Chemistry, was approved last week by the UC Regents as the Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor. After benefiting from his exceptional leadership since last March, when he began filling the position on an interim appointment, the campus will continue to be well served by his outstanding experience and dedication.

Alison Galloway, Professor of Anthropology, has accepted the position of Interim Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. Her status as a leading scholar in her field, and her previous administrative experience as Chair of the Anthropology Department, plus perspective gained from her recent service as Chair of the Academic Senate combine to provide excellent background for this job.

William A. (Bill) Ladusaw, Professor of Linguistics, who has held the position on an interim basis since July 2004, has accepted the position of Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education. A former College Provost and Department Chair, he will continue to provide stellar leadership for advancing undergraduate teaching and learning at UC Santa Cruz.

Lisa C. Sloan, Professor of Earth Sciences, who has served in the last year as the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, has accepted the position of Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies. With a return to full-time status for that position, her appointment underscores the campus priority to expand graduate and postdoctoral education.

Carl Walsh, Professor of Economics, who has served in the past year as Faculty Assistant to the Chancellor, focusing on Silicon Valley issues, has accepted the position of Vice Provost for Silicon Valley Initiatives. In this role, he will be responsible for academic programs based in Silicon Valley, the NASA Ames University Affiliated Research Center (UARC), and the Bio-Info-Nano Research and Development Institute (BIN RDI).

Virginia (Ginny) Steel will join our campus as University Librarian, effective October 1. In this position, she will assume leadership of the library, including oversight for the McHenry Library Renovation and Expansion project.

Searches for two other important positions are underway. Robert C. Miller, Vice Chancellor, Research, has announced his intention to step down from that position at the end of this academic year. The search to fill the post will be led by Interim Dean of Physical and Biological Sciences Stephen Thorsett. The search to fill the Vice Chancellor, University Relations position, vacated when Ron Suduiko accepted a position at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, also is underway. That search is led by Dean of the Baskin School of Engineering Sung-Mo (Steve) Kang.

Again, please join me in congratulating each of the outstanding individuals whose appointments are announced above.

With all best regards,
Denice D. Denton
Chancellor

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON APPOINTMENTS

Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor (CP/EVC)
The Regents of the University of California have approved the appointment of Professor David S. Kliger to the position of Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor (CP/EVC). The CP/EVC is responsible for the day-to-day academic and administrative operations of UC Santa Cruz, including long-term planning for the campus community, oversight of the UCSC budget, and advising the Chancellor on all campus issues.

Having served as Interim CP/EVC since March of this year, Professor Kliger has accepted the appointment to continue his service to the campus on a permanent basis. He brings an extensive record of scholarly achievement and administrative experience to this position, including service as Dean of Physical and Biological Sciences for more than 14 years. A professor of Chemistry, who earned his Ph.D. at Cornell University, Professor Kliger joined the UC Santa Cruz faculty in 1971. His primary research interests span the fields of physical chemistry and biophysics.

Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (VPAA)
Professor Alison Galloway was appointed to the position of Interim VPAA, effective August 1, 2005. In this position Professor Galloway is responsible for campus academic administration, including coordination and implementation of campus academic planning, review of academic programs and associated resource allocation.

A member of the UCSC faculty since 1990, Professor Galloway received her Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1988 from the University of Arizona. She is a physical/biological anthropologist specializing in the study of the human skeleton. Her areas of research include legal aspects of forensic anthropology, rates and processes of decomposition, age-related changes in the skeleton, and analysis of trauma. She is certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology and consults with the coroners/medical examiners for many Central and Northern California counties. She has served in a number of important positions within her department and division, as well as in the Academic Senate, including service as Chair of the Academic Senate from 2003-2005.

Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education (VPDUE)
Professor William Ladusaw has accepted my invitation to serve as Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education, effective October 1, 2005. Professor Ladusaw has been serving in this post in an interim capacity since July 1, 2004. The VPDUE advises on all aspects of undergraduate education, provides leadership and coordination for academic programs in the colleges, and oversees planning, organization, and management of academic support programs.

A Professor of Linguistics, who earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin in 1979, he joined the UCSC faculty in 1984. Professor Ladusaw's scholarly research concerns linguistic semantics and pragmatics -- the description of meaning in language, how it is related to grammatical structure, and how we understand what is said in context. He is widely recognized as an outstanding campus citizen with a record of service contributions at all levels of the University. He recently served as a member of the Steering Committee for the new Academic Information Systems (AIS), and in the past year, he steered the WASC reaccreditation process. In 2002 he assumed the role of AIS Steward, Advising and Degree Audit, helping to guide the implementation of this critical new campus system.

Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies
Professor Lisa C. Sloan has accepted an appointment as the Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies. Her appointment recognizes the need for a full-time administrator to oversee graduate education. In this role, Professor Sloan will be responsible for graduate and postdoctoral education on the Santa Cruz campus. She will provide campus leadership as well as academic, administrative, and strategic direction to the Graduate Division. (http://currents.ucsc.edu/05-06/08-22/appointments-viceprovosts.asp)

Professor Sloan received her Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. She came to UCSC in 1992, as a research scientist with the Institute of Marine Sciences. In 1994, she was appointed as a faculty member in the Department of Earth Sciences. Her scholarly interests focus on understanding the processes that have controlled past climates, environments, and surficial processes in Earth history. Her research has concentrated primarily on Cenozoic events and processes, with emphasis on the warm and transitional intervals of that era of Earth history. She has served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies since 2004.

Vice Provost for Silicon Valley Initiatives
Professor Carl Walsh has accepted an appointment to the position of Vice Provost for Silicon Valley Initiatives, with responsibility for academic programs based in Silicon Valley, the NASA Ames University Affiliated Research Center (UARC), and the Bio-Info-Nano Research and Development Institute (BIN RDI). For the past year, he has served as Faculty Assistant to the Chancellor with responsibilities for Silicon Valley initiatives. (http://currents.ucsc.edu/05-06/08-22/appointments-viceprovosts.asp)

Professor Walsh earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1976. He joined the UC Santa Cruz faculty in 1987. His research interests are in the areas of monetary policy and central banking. He has an extensive campus service record, including appointments as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Planning and Programs from 1995-97, and as Faculty Assistant to the Executive Vice Chancellor from 1998-2001.

University Librarian
After an extensive national search, Virginia Steel has accepted our offer to become University Librarian. The appointment is effective on October 1. (

Since 2001, she has served as Director of Libraries at Washington State University (WSU) in Pullman. In that capacity, she has overseen the activities of six libraries on the Pullman campus and a budget of $11 million. She also coordinated library services across all four WSU campuses. At Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1997 to 2001, she served as Associate Director for Public Services, overseeing 125 staff and the operations and facilities of 14 branch libraries and departments with a budget of $7 million.

From 1988 to 1997, she served in several positions at UC San Diego. One of them was as head of the Social Sciences and Humanities Library, managing UCSD's largest branch with collections of 1.2 million volumes, a budget of $4 million, and 60 staff. During her time at UCSD, she also served as the head of the Access Services Department and as Acting Assistant University Librarian for Public Services.
