Re: Chancellor's Message: Hurricane Katrina

Dear UC Santa Cruz Colleagues:

We all are shocked and sorrowed by the unimaginable dimension of human suffering and loss that Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath have wreaked. Besides feeling deepest sympathy for everyone struggling in the devastated region, all of us also are concerned that some of our campus community may be directly affected. If any of you know of the particular situation of any student, staff, faculty, alumni, or friend, who have experienced the impact of this tragedy, please share that information, so we can work together to help in any way we can.

In addition, like others around the world, we all share a desire to do whatever can be done for those caught up in the disaster. The UC Santa Cruz Admissions Office has already spoken with several dozen displaced students and is assisting them, either by offering a place here to UC-qualified applicants or by helping them connect with admissions staff at another college or university. The staff of the Financial Aid and Housing offices also are stepping up to offer assistance.

A campus coordinating committee has formed to consider other ways that we can help, and a special UCSC web site has been set up to share information about ways to join in the rescue effort (http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/katrina/).

Included on the site is a link to a public statement from President Dynes, noting that UC campuses, especially medical centers, and national labs, are determining what resources that can be made available to support the immediate clinical and public health emergency needs, as well as the long-term health recovery efforts, in the Gulf Coast region.

Many people around the country are making financial contributions, and for those who wish to do so, here is a list of agencies that are mounting relief efforts, should you wish to contribute through them.

* United Way of Santa Cruz County, http://www.unitedwaysc.org
* American Red Cross, 800-HELP-NOW or http://www.redcross.org (Local contact is Patsy Hernandez at 462-2881, Ext. 16 or by e-mail phernandez@scredcross.org)
* Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz and San Benito County, 800-344-8070 or http://www.secondharvest.com
* Catholic Charities, 800-919-9338 or http://www.catholiccharitiesusa.org
* Operation Blessing, 800-436-6348 or http://www.ob.org
* Salvation Army, 800-SAL-ARMY or http://www.salvationarmyusa.org

A more extensive list of organizations helping disaster victims is available at http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=18473

Please join me in thanking our campus colleagues and the members of our extended UC community who are helping address this national emergency. True to our reputation for making a positive difference in the world, I know that each of us in our own way will do what we can to assist. We will keep you apprised of the UCSC and UC system plans to respond to this tragedy.

Cordially yours,

Denice D. Denton
Chancellor
