Administrative Message September 21, 2004 To: Campus Community From: Larry Merkley, Vice Provost, Information Technology Services Re: New IT Senior Management TeamI am pleased to announce the final four members of the new IT Senior Management Team. The naming of these new directors is the next step toward the reorganization of IT services on the UC Santa Cruz campus. In the next few months, the directors will develop the scope and reporting relationships for each of their units within the new IT organization. Previously announced, though included as part of the IT Senior Management Team is Pat LeCuyer, Director, Applications Solutions, and Bill Hyder, Director, Client Relationship Management. ________ I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Janine A. Roeth to the position of Director, Information Technology Services in the division of Information Technology Services (ITS). In that capacity, Janine will oversee the design, implementation, and delivery of a defined set of IT services to clients of the new IT organization. Janine has almost 20 years of experience in information technology, including 7 years as Director of Distributing Computing Group for CATS at UC Santa Cruz. Prior to working on campus, Janine has been technical manager in an education software company, a startup multimedia company, and for the research group of Apple Computer where she customized support across a diverse spectrum of technologies. Janine has demonstrated her ability as a leader with a commitment to client needs. Her capacity at both a strategic and tactical level will greatly support our new IT organization’s transition to a client-focused, services-based model. ________ Director, Core Technologies I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Bradley R. (Brad) Smith to the position of Director, Core Technologies in the division of Information Technology Services, (ITS) effective October 1, 2004. In that capacity, Brad will be responsible for managing all consolidated IT systems resources and for providing a secure and stable computing environment for the campus. Brad’s experience and accomplishments make him exceptionally qualified to lead the Core Technologies unit. From his 12 years as Computing Director for the School of Engineering, Brad has an in-depth understanding of the technology and organizational issues involved in providing the IT foundation required by a leading research organization such as UC Santa Cruz. Most recently, as the Acting Assistant Dean for the School of Engineering, Brad has obtained a broad understanding of campus administration, operations, and budget processes. Throughout Brad’s career, he has demonstrated a commitment to developing, attracting, and retaining excellent engineering staff through professional development and organizational excellence. This combination of technical depth and understanding of campus processes will be important assets for building a solid and effective Core Technology unit. ________ Director, Program Management Office I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Cianca to the position of Director, Program Management Office in the division of Information Technology Services (ITS). Mark will be committed to his current role as Director, Academic Information Systems (AIS) until a replacement is named to ensure ongoing success with the AIS project. As Director of the Program Management Office, Mark will be responsible for overseeing the management of all IT Programs and Projects, developing project management methods and standards, and fostering the development of strong project management competencies throughout the IT organization. Mark has over 14 years of experience in project management and strategic planning at UC Santa Cruz, including 6 years in his current position as Director of AIS. As director, Mark provides leadership and project direction for the implementation of PeopleSoft based Academic Information Systems and Enterprise Portal. In Mark’s previous positions on campus, he has managed a team of web development staff to provide application development services to internal clientele. As well, Mark was the Director of the Public Events Office involving significant collaboration and personal leadership skills. With Mark’s dynamic approach to program and project management, leadership experience, knowledge of the institution, and commitment to programs of high strategic value, he is specially qualified to create and lead the Program Management Office for the new IT organization. ________ Director, IT Strategy and Planning I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Linda M. Kittle to the position of Director, Strategy and Planning in the division of Information Technology Services, (ITS) effective September 15. Linda will retain her position as Director, Strategic Planning for the campus, but will commit one-half of her time to join the new senior management team of ITS. As Director of Strategy and Planning, Linda will be responsible for defining and managing the IT planning process and ensuring its alignment and integration with campus and divisional strategy and priorities. Linda has over 22 years of experience in strategic planning and management at UC Santa Cruz, including 8 years in her current position. As director and in previous positions on campus, Linda has actively engaged in and led organizational change efforts from a variety of roles – unit manager, facilitator, project manager, and process designer. Linda’s campus-wide experience in strategic alignment, planning and management, along with her commitment to align organizational goals with available resources within IT, demonstrates her ability to successfully lead the Strategy and Planning unit for the new IT organization. I want to express my appreciation to Acting Chancellor Chemers and Vice Chancellor Meredith Michaels for giving Linda the opportunity to add this new leadership role to her many existing responsibilities.
