Re: Fundraising Goal Reached and Surpassed

At today's meeting of the UC Regents, I had the pleasure of announcing that our first campuswide fundraising campaign has achieved its goal of $50 million - and powered past to a total of $55 million raised as of today.

This spectacular achievement portends even greater opportunity for building partnerships and achieving campus priorities. Through their gifts, our generous donors have endorsed the value of our work and have expressed their confidence in the future of our campus. I invite all campus members to join me in thanking our benefactors for their support -- their contributions truly will transform lives.

Special thanks also are due to the campus community, including deans, faculty, alumni and trustees, who have worked with great dedication to reach this unprecedented fundraising success. In addition, we all owe gratitude to M.R.C. Greenwood and Martin M. Chemers, both of whom provided vigorous leadership for this campaign.

Special recognition is due to Vice Chancellor Ronald P. Suduiko and his dedicated team in University Relations for their unflagging and effective work in developing and supporting the campaign.

A news release detailing the campaign and this milestone is posted at (http://press.ucsc.edu/text.asp?pid=652). An audio link and a slide show of the presentation at the Regents' meeting is included. You also may refer to the Cornerstone Campaign web site,  http://giving.ucsc.edu

Please join me in celebrating this wonderful campus accomplishment and in thanking everyone who helped make it possible.

The success of this Cornerstone Campaign now lays the foundation for aggressive planning of a comprehensive fundraising campaign, another "first" for our campus. With only about 34 percent of campus operating budget coming from state funds, private donations are critically important. Our united effort toward a comprehensive campaign will be especially meaningful, since the power of private philanthropy generates more than funds -- it supports innovation, unites the campus community, and expands opportunity. I look forward to sharing these exciting prospects with you.
