Re: UC Santa Cruz Responds to Tsunami and Aftermath

As we have all witnessed in news reports, the earthquake and tsunami in South Asia have wreaked terrible human suffering. We share much more than a general sympathy, since there are many personal and professional relationships between UC Santa Cruz and the people of the devastated region. More than 70 of our students have recently participated in the UC Education Abroad Program in that region, and a number of faculty and staff also have important connections there. I know I speak for all of us in expressing heartfelt sympathy to all of the people of the region and beyond who have endured losses.

In situations like this, we naturally want to help--and there are many opportunities to do so. A Chancellor's Ad Hoc Committee led by Student Affairs and including staff, faculty and students has been established to coordinate various aspects of campus support for the victims and their families. Members of the committee are listed below, and each of them is available for your questions and suggestions.

As well, Counseling and Psychological Services is available to any faculty, staff or student, who would like help in dealing with personal reactions to the tragedy.

A special campus web site has been established with links to ways you may contribute to the relief effort and other resources (http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/tsunami/). It will be updated as new information is made available.

Again, please join me in extending sincere sympathy and support to all affected by this disaster.
