September 17, 2003 To: Campus Community From: Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood Re: Announcement of contract to establish University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) at NASA Ames.I am very pleased to announce that UC Santa Cruz has been awarded a contract to manage a national research project valued at more than 330 million dollars. NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. announced the agreement with the University of California just today. The ten-year contract, a first-of-its-kind for NASA, will establish a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) at NASA Ames. The UARC will provide a unique combination of research and educational capabilities to meet NASA's mission requirements and to develop future human resources in technology and science. The collaboration with NASA showcases our campus' strengths in innovation and multidisciplinary work, and it is a singular opportunity to advance important research, while enhancing the campus presence in Silicon Valley. As is similarly the case for a number of other major projects, such as the UCO/Lick Observatory and the national Center for Adaptive Optics, the UARC project will provide the platform on which UC Santa Cruz researchers offer our partners a portal to the rest of the UC system, while participating directly in important research. I know that the distinguished team of UC participants and our partners at San Jose State and Foothill and De Anza Community College District are eager to commence work with our NASA colleagues Many campus members contributed to the complex proposal process. I want to note especially the stalwart and successful work of Vice Chancellor Robert C. Miller, Vice Chancellor Tom Vani, Silicon Valley Center Deputy Director William Berry, Dean Steve Kang and Dean Dave Kliger. Please join me in congratulating them and the other faculty and staff who participated in the proposal process, and who now will lead the implementation of the project. Cordially yours, M.R.C. Greenwood
