April 19, 2004 To: Campus Community From: Martin M. Chemers, Acting Chancellor and Margaret L. Delaney, Interim Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Re: New Senior Staff AssignmentsWe wish to inform the campus community that we are implementing a strategic re-configuration of senior staff positions within the offices of the Chancellor and the Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor (CP/EVC). Effective immediately, these changes are intended to meet several administrative objectives, including the recognition and retention of key senior managers and the development of additional expertise and capacity needed to accomplish a host of institutional goals. We hope you will agree that we have assembled an excellent team to assist us and the campus at this time. Dr. Leslie A. Sunell, who joined UC Santa Cruz in 1996 and has been Assistant Chancellor, will now serve as Associate Chancellor -- Chief of Staff, with responsibilities that include liaison with the Office of the President and Regents, internal and external relations, policy development, special assignments, and campuswide authority for the senior management program, affirmative action, Title IX, ombudsman, information asset management, and other areas. William (Bill) Hyder, formerly Assistant Dean in the Division of Social Sciences, will move from his current position as Assistant Provost, to a new position, Assistant Chancellor -- Operations. Bill's responsibilities will include broad oversight for Chancellor's office operations, budget, systems, and Executive Budget Committee transformations, as well as direct oversight for special projects at the discretion of the Acting Chancellor. Also joining the senior staff team will be Charlotte Moreno. Assuming the Assistant Provost position, she will provide direct executive support to the interim CP/EVC as well as coordination among associated units. Charlotte has served six years as Assistant Dean in the Division of Physical & Biological Sciences. She filled a variety of staff roles in departmental and divisional management in the sciences prior to her appointment as assistant dean. Her experience with the workings of academic units at all levels adds depth to the senior staff team. We are fortunate and very pleased to report no change in two other key positions -- Judi Hance continues in her capacity as Assistant to the Chancellor, and Marilyn Chapin continues as Assistant to the Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor.
