Re: Budget message from Chancellor and Campus Provost

Dear Colleagues:

Earlier today, Governor Davis presented his plan for cutting the current state budget by approximately $5 billion, as a first step toward addressing the $21-billion deficit.

This plan includes immediate budget reductions for the University of California. The Office of the President has issued a news release which describes a combination of mid-year cuts, on top of cuts already implemented, plus additional systemwide student fee increases effective spring 2003 term.

President Atkinson also has issued a message to the university community. (http://currents.ucsc.edu/02-03/12-09/atkinson_budget5.html)

Although we won't know until next week what the specific effect on this campus will be, guiding principles by which UC Santa Cruz will address budget reductions are in place
(http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/budget_impact/12.06.02_principles.html).

As noted in a letter to the deans and vice chancellors, Provost Simpson has engaged the campus administrative and faculty leadership in discussion of budget management principles, strategies, and next steps due to impending budget cuts. Now, we will begin to act in light of these conclusions (http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/budget_impact/12.05.02_chancellor_budget.html).

A dedicated web site to provide ongoing updates on the budget has been established (http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/budget_impact/). It will serve as one of the ways we will ensure an open, transparent process as we meet these challenges.

This is a time of serious deliberation, information sharing, renewed commitment to our institutional values, and heightened focus on our institutional effectiveness. As a campus, we can expect to emerge from this unpredictable and challenging period strong, resolute, and ready for the next set of opportunities which will surely follow.
