Re: Reminder: Strike logistics 10/14-15

To the Campus Community:

Anticipating a union strike next week, this is a reminder of communications channels that will be in place to keep you informed about logistical issues that may result from the picketing. You will find this same information, as well as other related information for employees and supervisors at this web site: http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/strike_10-02/

Communication Channels
The campus telephone hotline 459-INFO (459-4636) will be activated beginning at 6 a.m. on Monday morning, and will be updated regularly throughout the strike.

The web site (http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/strike_10-02/) also will be updated as changes warrant.

The campus radio station KZSC (88.1 FM) will intermittently broadcast information about campus access and parking. KUSP (88.9 FM), KSCO (1080 AM), and KPIG (107.5 FA) also will be provided with information to use in their traffic reports.

Traffic and Parking
There may be slower traffic than usual on Bay Street and on High Street, so more time may be needed to get to the campus.

The Metro buses are not expected to cross the picket line, but will drop off passengers at the stop across the street from the main entrance. Passengers will walk across the street to transfer to campus shuttles. TAPS plans to deploy all available buses, but bus riders should plan more time than usual to reach their campus destination.

If traffic becomes too heavy, drivers may be directed to alternative parking at the Seaside Company (Boardwalk) parking lot. Should that occur, campus shuttles will provide transportation between the Boardwalk and the campus into the evening hours. Should this alternative be implemented, the changes will be announced through the communication channels described above.

Individuals might consider staying on campus during lunch hours and other breaks, to reduce the amount of traffic and avoid possible delays.

Mail Services and Child Care
Normal US Postal Service to campus is expected and FedEx service will operate. UPS service will not be available.

All child care facilities will remain open. Credentialed administrative staff will fill in without a compromise to child-teacher ratio.
