October 4, 2002 To: University Employees From: Thomas Vani, Vice Chancellor, Business and Administrative Services Re: Potential strike -- message from Thomas VaniThis is to advise you that the UC-AFT (representing Lecturers) and CUE (representing Clericals) have announced their intention to strike on October 14-15. Other employees, including Technical, Research Professionals and some ladder-rank faculty, may join the strike or refuse to cross the picket lines. However, all employees are expected to come to work. Offices will be kept open, classes will be taught, and the campus will provide essential services. While we are making plans to alleviate disruption of campus services during the strike, we may experience some inconveniences such as reduced bus service and delayed deliveries. We expect picket lines to be in place at the Main Entrance and West Entrance to campus, and at other locations such as at University Town Center, UC Inn and Long Marine Lab. TAPS will operate all available campus transit vehicles to accommodate the anticipated demand for shuttle services should the Santa Cruz Metro (SCMTD) buses refuse to travel onto campus. As in the past, all Route 1 and 12 buses will load and unload passengers at transit stops adjacent to the Main Entrance on Bay and High Streets, and passengers will walk onto the campus to board Day Shuttles. It is critical that employees understand the consequences of participating in a strike or honoring a picket line. All faculty, staff, academic and student employees are expected to meet their normal obligations to the University in the event of a strike. Those who do not will not be paid unless prior approval for a legitimate absence has been granted. Those who call in sick on the day of a strike are required to provide documentation from a health care provider to receive approval for the absence. Contracts with the UC-AFT, CUE, UPTE and other unions are being negotiated through the UC President’s Office. The President’s Office assures us that they are bargaining in good faith, have reached agreement on a number of issues and have proposed a number of solutions to the major issues raised by the unions. The UCOP web site has the most complete information regarding ongoing negotiations: http://www.ucop.edu/humres/labor. The campus Public Information Office (459-2495) will handle all inquiries from the media. Strike updates will be available on the following web site: http://www.ucsc.edu/news_events/strike_10-02/ If you have any questions, please contact the campus Labor Relations Office at 459-2017.
