Re: Sept. 11 anniversary

The first anniversary of the September 11 attacks presents an opportunity to mourn the many lives that were lost a year ago, celebrate the indomitable human spirit the attacks could not extinguish, and reflect on this very challenging period in human history.

Our campus has organized a memorial honoring the victims of last year's attacks. We will gather at noon on Wednesday, September 11, in the Upper Quarry Amphitheater. For more information about the ceremony, please go to the following web page in this week's issue of Currents Online: http://currents.ucsc.edu/02-03/09-09/memorial.html.

On that same web page, you can find links to a note from University of California President Richard Atkinson, information about 9-11 events elsewhere in the Santa Cruz area, and details about a public forum on campus later this month that will be led by faculty with expertise on the Middle East and Islam.

The Currents web page, above, features the reflections of five UCSC professors who analyze the events of the past 12 months and offer their views of the activities that may take center stage in the months to come.

I am grateful for their thoughtful commentaries and am reminded about the many contributions members of the UCSC community have made to the discussion and debate that have followed last year's tragedy.

More than ever, our research university has a crucial role for society. Let us continue our commitment to shine the light of knowledge on those issues that darken our world.
