Re: Clerical and Lecturer Strike Update
On August 15, 2002, CUE-- the Coalition of University Employees representing the University's clerical workers-- notified the Office of the President and the Public Employment Relations Board that on August 26-28, CUE intends to engage in a strike, picketing, and/or other activity for a period of seventy-two (72) hours at the University of California, at its Berkeley campus as well as at the Office of the President. The UC-AFT, representing University lecturers, notified the University on August 21 that it also intends to engage in a strike and other activities on the same dates and at the same locations.
The University of California maintains that these strikes will be an unlawful attempt to put pressure on the University during negotiations, as both CUE and the UC-AFT will undertake strikes without the parties completing the negotiating process.
Other locations, such as the Santa Cruz campus, may experience activities such as informational picketing and noontime rallies in support of the strikes at Berkeley and Office of the President. Employees may participate in such activities on non-work time, but are expected to meet their normal work obligations.
