May 21, 2003 To: Campus Community From: Vice Chancellor Tom Vani, Business and Administrative Services Re: Police Chief Jan Tepper RetiringAfter 25 years with UCSC, Police Chief Jan Tepper will be retiring June 30, 2003. Jan has provided the campus with exemplary service during her tenure. Hired as a Police Officer in 1978, she was promoted to Sergeant in 1982, to Lieutenant in 1983, and to Police Chief in 1991. Jan has a distinguished background, receiving her bachelor's degree in criminology from UC Berkeley in 1974 and becoming the first female patrol officer in Santa Cruz County in 1975. In 1984, Jan worked at the Los Angeles Olympics in charge of the perimeter. She graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1993. Jan has shown outstanding commitment to community policing, and to remaining accessible to the community she serves. She has an outstanding reputation in the regional law enforcement community and beyond, and is highly regarded among her colleagues at the other UC campuses. Jan has been an excellent Police Chief, role model, and mentor, fostering many careers and advocating for the Police Department, emergency preparedness, and campus security. Jan will be sorely missed by the many people she has worked with on campus. We wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement. Assistant Police Chief Mickey Aluffi, who came to the campus in 1999 and has over thirty years of experience in law enforcement, will be promoted into the Chief position effective July 1, 2003. We are very fortunate to have such a qualified Assistant Chief and will endeavor to make the transition as seamless as possible as he assumes his his new duties as Police Chief. As we bid farewell to Jan, please join me in welcoming Mickey in his new role. Sincerely, Tom Vani
