May 1, 2003 To: Campus Community From: M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor Re: Invitation from Chancellor: Celebration of Engineering 2 Building Construction Ceremony and "Hard Hat Tour"Dear Colleagues: Please join the Baskin School of Engineering faculty and staff as they celebrate the rapid progress of the construction of the new Engineering 2 Building. On Monday, May 5, from 11 a.m. to noon, a ceremony will take place next to the construction site (follow the signs). Campus officials will be on hand to recognize the importance and significance of the construction project for the long-term growth of the Baskin School of Engineering and the whole campus. Following the brief ceremony, a "Hard Hat Tour" will give participants a closer look at the construction project. The $62 million Engineering 2 Building will provide 70,000 square feet for teaching and research as well as house two of the California Institutes for Science and Innovation, established in 2000 by Governor Gray Davis -- the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and the Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research (QB3). This institute space will serve as an incubator for transforming the engineering school's information technology, biotechnology, and nanotechnology research outcomes into next-generation industry products and services.
