March 26, 2003 To: UC Santa Cruz Community From: M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor; George Blumenthal, Chair, Academic Senate Re: Message from the Chancellor and the Academic Senate Chair: Flying Karamazov BrothersDear Colleagues: On Saturday, April 12 at 8 p.m., the world renowned Flying Karamazov Brothers will present their inimitable blend of comedy and juggling in a benefit performance for Shakespeare Santa Cruz at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz. We urge you to bring your family and friends for a wonderful evening of entertainment and also lend your support to this cherished UC Santa Cruz theater company at the same time. The Flying Karamazov Brothers got their start on the streets of Santa Cruz. Brothers Howard Jay Patterson and Paul Magid (AKA Ivan and Dmitri) met here at UCSC as freshmen and began juggling together in 1973. Since then, the Karamazov have toured the world and enjoyed six successful and critically acclaimed runs on Broadway. In 1987, for their third Broadway appearance, our hometown boys starred in their own adaptation of Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors - a highly acclaimed production performed at New York's Lincoln Center and at The Goodman Theater in Chicago. They have shared the stage with Robin Williams, The Blues Brothers and The Grateful Dead and appeared on numerous television shows including an episode of "Seinfeld" as the Flying Sando Brothers, as themselves on "Ellen" and on their own Showtime special. In yet another medium, the Karamazovs co-starred with Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny De Vito, in the hit movie, Jewel of the Nile. Founding members Howard Jay Patterson and Paul Magid will be reunited with Randy Nelson (Alyosha) and Tim Furst (Fyodor) for this single benefit performance. The four first performed together in 1976.
