February 3, 2003 To: Campus Community From: M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor Re: Message from the Chancellor: Loss of the space shuttle ColumbiaWe are all saddened by Saturday's loss of the space shuttle Columbia and its seven extraordinary passengers. Those individuals' personal accomplishments were many. They all were astronauts because of their unquenchable desire to be explorers, their commitment to excellence, and their willingness to take significant risks. They also represented the quest for knowledge and spirit of curiosity that are the hallmark of research universities like ours. Their absence will be felt mostly deeply by their families, but also by the large and extended NASA community. On behalf of UC Santa Cruz, I have sent our condolences to NASA Ames, one of our important educational and research partners. At least one of the astronauts, mission specialist Dr. Kalpana Chawla, conducted research on three-dimensional simulations of air flows while at NASA Ames in the early 1990s. NASA's community is, as we have heard in news reports, like a family, and tragic situations like this affect the entire fabric of the organization. I encourage members of our campus community who have connections with NASA personnel to reach out to them at this difficult time. Thank you.
