January 29, 2003 To: Campus Community From: M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor Re: Message from Chancellor GreenwoodDear Colleagues: Upon my return to the campus today, I learned of a disturbing flyer posted by unknown parties on Science Hill and perhaps elsewhere. This poster identifies five of our distinguished Engineering faculty as "outlaws" (sic) and impugns their research. Second, I want to make it clear that these are among our most senior faculty, each one an excellent teacher and accomplished researcher. They are participants in the REINAS project, which I hasten to point out is not a "warfare project" as claimed by the poster. REINAS is, in fact, one of the nation's most sophisticated environmental sensing projects. http://www.cse.ucsc.edu/projects/reinas/ Third, while individuals are, of course, free to express their points of view, doing so in a manner that targets or threatens others is wholly inconsistent with our campus values as summarized by our Principles of Community. http://www.ucsc.edu/administration/principles_community.html During troubled times such as these, it is all the more important to maintain our collegiality and to encourage the same in others. No one in our community should feel threatened, harassed or be the subject of intentional misrepresentation.
