January 15, 2003 To: Campus Community From: The Chancellor and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation Planning Committee Re: Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation & Panel DiscussionThe campus' 19th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Convocation will be held next Tuesday, January 21 at 7 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium in downtown Santa Cruz. This year's keynote speaker is Civil Rights Leader & Nonviolence Activist, Rev. James Lawson, Jr. The title of his speech will be "Chaos or Community: It's Our Choice." Rev. Lawson was a colleague of Dr. King's and "architect" of the nonviolent action strategy of the civil rights movement. A prominent Christian leader in the American South, Rev. Lawson studied the techniques of Gandhi in India before joining forces with Dr. King. As Southern Secretary of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Lawson conducted workshops on nonviolent strategy and became the chief organizer of the Nashville Sit-in Movement. Lawson today continues to lecture and teach on practical applications of nonviolent resistance. As always, the Convocation is free and open to the public. Wednesday, January 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mainstage Theater, Dr. Lawson will join us on-campus for a panel discussion of nonviolent resistance. Led by Community Studies Professor Paul Ortiz, the panel will include Anthropology Professor Carolyn Martin Shaw and two students. Lawson is a dynamic and inspired speaker and his topic is a timely reminder of the continuing relevance of Dr. King's work and teachings. We are fortunately to have such a distinguished visitor to our campus community and we hope that you will join us for both of these events. We ask faculty and department staff to share information about both of these events as widely as possible with students. Shuttles will run down to the Civic on Tuesday evening between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m.
