January 10, 2003 To: Campus Community From: M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor Re: Passing of Steve CusterIt is with deep sadness that I write to inform you that Steve Custer, a 15-year veteran of the UCSC Fire Department, died unexpectedly while off duty earlier this week. Steve was an engineer with the department at the time of his death. Steve was well liked by his Fire Department colleagues. Chief Hernandez says Steve will be remembered as a hard worker and compassionate person who received a tremendous amount of pleasure from helping others. He also had a reputation as an inventive firehouse cook. In addition to serving the campus so loyally as a firefighter, Steve attended UCSC as a College Eight student, earning a bachelor's degree in economics in 1987. A private service is planned. Please join me in remembering Steve and expressing sincere condolences to his wife, Ruth; his mother and brother; and to his many friends--both on and off campus.
