Re: Second Harvest Food Bank

Dear Colleagues,

I am very pleased to share with you a progress report on the 2001 Campus Food Drive for the Second Harvest Food Bank.

As of this week, we have realized the food and cash equivalent of over 11 tons of food! The campus committee has been working hard to get the word out about this effort, and contributions are coming in by the hour. Our students have been participating enthusiastically in the Give a Meal program and other aspects of the Food Drive, and are credited with donating over 6 tons of food already. We are well on our way toward achieving our campus goal of 20 tons this year, and I’d like to remind you of ways that you can help us reach -- and exceed -- this goal:

1) You may donate canned goods at the Food Donation Truck. The Campus Mail Services has parked a mail truck in the Granary parking lot as a drop off location for your bags of canned goods. For your convenience, this truck will be parked there every day from 7 to 9 a.m. until December 14.

2) You may choose to write a check to the Second Harvest Food Bank, and mail it to: UCSC Food Drive, c/o Campus Mail Services. Be sure to note "UCSC Food Drive" on your check. For every dollar donated, Second Harvest is able to distribute more than $10 worth of food.

The Food Drive makes a real difference in our community. The food collected for the Second Harvest Food Bank provides 65,000 families with 3 meals a day, and financial contributions make it possible for Second Harvest to provide $6 million worth of food each year.

The final week of the Campus Food Drive is the week of December 10, culminating on Friday, December 14 with the annual community "Fill The Bus" event, which is always very exciting.

Please join me in participating in this worthwhile effort, and in distributing this information widely within your units.

Thank you!
