November 15, 2001 To: Campus community From: Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor John Simpson Re: Budget Update from Campus ProvostDear Colleagues: RE: Budget Update We now have a better idea of the California budget situation, and what it means for UCSC. The Governor announced yesterday afternoon the midyear budget cuts that will come to the University during this fiscal year. These are specified in four primary categories, as follows: $ 5M Cut to clinical teaching support for the hospitals $ 6M Cut to Professional Development Institutes which provide training for K-12 teachers $50M Transfer of funding for the Governor's Science Institutes to lease revenue bonds $25M To be taken from energy and other areas - details to be decided $86M Total Although this is not as severe as I thought it might be, it is still a serious concern, and it is not yet clear precisely what this means for our campus budget. I will inform you about these cuts, especially as they may relate to the campus and its programs, as details become available to me. I must caution the campus, though, that I continue to anticipate a significant budget cut in the next fiscal year. Although I do not presently know the size of the cut the University or the campus will be asked to sustain next year, all indications are that there will be a budget cut to the campuses. All of us thus should be aware of this and regulate our expenditures accordingly. I anticipate that the Governor's Budget, to be released in January, will begin to provide information on the magnitude and the parameters of next year's cut. Our campus will not know the final details of this, however, until the conclusion of next year's legislative session. Sincerely yours, /s/JBS John B. Simpson cc: Academic Senate Chair Blumenthal
