Re: National Day of Mourning, Friday, September 14

President George W. Bush has declared Friday, September 14 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on Tuesday. In particular, the President has asked "the people of the United States and places of worship [to] mark this National Day of Prayer and Remembrance with noontime memorial services..."

I encourage all faculty, staff and students to participate in this period of mourning at local events -- at houses of worship, with coworkers here on campus, or in quiet reflection at a location of your choice. I urge supervisors to allow their staff flexibility for two hours at mid-day on Friday.

As you know, thousands of students and their parents will be arriving at mid-day tomorrow, and we must take care to accommodate them at this important time of transition. Many of our staff will play key roles in that critical set of activities. I would appreciate supervisory flexibility for these staff at some time on Friday so that they may observe this National Day of Prayer and Remembrance.

In an earlier memo to you, I mentioned that a Campus Vigil is planned for Sunday evening, September 16, in the Quarry. The extended campus community, including faculty, staff and their families, and all students are invited to attend this solemn event. Final details will be available on Currents Online, which is being updated often during this crisis.
