September 13, 2001 To: Campus Community From: Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood Re: From Chancellor: in the aftermathDear Campus Colleagues, Our lives have changed forever, and we don't even know yet how. In the aftermath of tragedies of yesterday, it will take time for the nation and our community to heal. Let me reiterate my concern and sympathy for all of the victims and their families. I share your shock, horror and worry. I fervently hope that none of your friends or family has been directly affected. Working together, staff, faculty, students, and administrators are planning activities to help us all get through this difficult time. I announce some of them here and I invite you all to participate. On Thursday, September 13, from noon to 1 p.m., there will be a gathering and moment of reflection at the Music Recital Hall, including a piano interlude played by Professor Anatole Leikin. Then, we'll share informal conversation and light refreshments in the nearby plaza. On Sunday evening, September 16, in the Quarry, there will be a Campus Twilight Vigil in commemoration of the national tragedy. The extended campus community, including faculty and staff and their families, and all students are invited to attend this solemn event. Final details will be available in Currents Online, which is being updated daily during this crisis. These, and selected other events of the next seven days are listed at the following site: http://www.ucsc.edu/currents/01-02/09-03/campus_opening.html. As the fall quarter begins, administrators, college provosts and faculty will continue working together to ensure that our community has timely and appropriate opportunities to engage in discussions about living in a diverse and complex society, where justice and civility are goals. These public forums or other such events will be announced in Currents Online. In the meantime, we have the opportunity to engage students, faculty and staff as we welcome them to the new academic year. On Tuesday evening, I had the occasion to meet with several hundred student leaders who already are on campus. They are an extraordinary group, who will play an important role this coming year. I also appreciated the chance to meet with new faculty this morning, both to welcome them to UCSC and inform them of our efforts in light of the national tragedy. As students return to campus beginning on Thursday, I will be visiting the colleges to welcome them and their parents. I encourage faculty to consider joining in move-in weekend activities at the colleges -- I know from my own experience that families and students are delighted and impressed to receive our greeting, and this expression of caring is especially important in the wake of recent tragedies. Please call Kristine Kilkenny or Lynda Rannals to sign up for a particular time. The telephone number is 459-2058. Finally, let me thank you, each of you, for your support, caring and concern during the past couple of days. In particular, I want to acknowledge the entire staff of Student Affairs. They have demonstrated highest professionalism, and are working especially hard to ease our new students' orientation and adjustment during this difficult time. Along with the many others UCSC-wide who are working hard to prepare for the beginning of the quarter, this group exemplifies the spirit of dedication, commitment to service, and compassion that characterizes our special campus community. With my best wishes and sincere thanks, M.R.C. Greenwood
