Re: Today's national tragedy

As the national tragedy of today unfolds, I write to express my concern and sympathy for all of the victims and their families of the terrorist attacks. I am especially concerned that any of your friends or family might be directly affected. A horror of this magnitude can't help but have an impact on each of us, and I want to acknowledge and share your shock and worry for our country and our world.

At this time, UC Santa Cruz offices are open. If you have a personal need to be away from work, you should contact your supervisor. Supervisors are urged to offer maximum flexibility to accommodate individual needs and circumstances.

UCSC Counseling and Psychological Services is already convening groups for people who wish to talk about the events. I encourage anyone who would benefit from these services to participate; for more information, call 459.2628. Now is the time to reach out to each other, and to provide comfort and support in every way possible.

Campus administration is convening to evaluate the available information and to consider issues of the next couple of days, as we prepare for the beginning of the fall quarter. If there is any news as a result of that meeting, or if the status of campus operations change, we will relay it immediately via our usual emergency communications systems: 459. INFO, the administrative email tree, KZSC FM 88.1, the campus home page (http://www.ucsc.edu), and in Currents Online (http://www.ucsc.edu/currents). Currents Online also is posting information about the status of local schools and public offices, reports from affected faculty and staff, and other information as it becomes available.

In the meantime, there are some things we can do to help. The Red Cross is accepting financial contributions; you can mail them to the American Red Cross, 942 Lupin Drive, Salinas, CA 93906. They are also asking for donations of blood; for information about how to donate, please call 1-800-GIVELIFE.

Again, let us all support each other in this time of national tragedy.
