7/16/01 To: Campus Community From: Chancellor Greenwood Re: AVC Hernandez to Office of the PresidentTO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY Dear Colleagues: I am pleased to announce an honor and an opportunity for Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Francisco J. Hernandez. He has been tapped for a one-year, part-time professional development assignment with the Office of the President, effective July 1, 2001. During this period, Vice Chancellor Hernandez will continue to direct key campus initiatives, including the completion of the UCSC Student Affairs Strategic Plan, the Student Affairs multi-year planning and budgeting process, the Academic Information System implementation, and the Academic Support Planning Committee. Many of the other duties within Student Affairs will be reassigned to Associate Vice Chancellors Heit, Thompson and Scott--and I invite you to support of them as they undertake additional temporary assignments. During the same time, I have asked Vice Chancellor Vani to assume temporary executive oversight of our housing construction projects, as we proceed to increase significantly the number of residential units for faculty, staff and students. In his new assignment, Vice Chancellor Hernandez will build on his systemwide reputation for innovation in K-14 outreach activities. Through his leadership, the University of California developed the UC College Preparatory Initiative, a pioneering program of online courses targeted at high school students with no other options for advanced placement and/or UC requisite courses. In his new role, Vice Chancellor Hernandez will expand this systemwide priority by increasing the number of participants and developing more on-line courses. In addition, Vice Chancellor Hernandez will develop strategic plans for using computer technologies to meet the goals of other outreach programs. This is a wonderful opportunity for Vice Chancellor Hernandez and for the Santa Cruz campus, and it underscores the esteem with which his leadership and expertise is regarded systemwide. Please join me in congratulating him and wishing him great success. M.R.C. Greenwood
